Tips on Using Humor in Your Speech

In the October Issue of Toastmaster Magazing, writer Judy Carter provides a few rules to follow when adding humor to your speech:

> Never Use a Joke You Didn't Write. Be creative and original when writing in jokes. Make sure the jokes fit the rest of your sppech content and don't steal jokes from other writers.

> Don't Add Off-Topic "Funny" Stories to Your Speech. Stay on track with your speech's message. If you have a funny story to add but it does not align with the main message, don't add it in.

> Look for Landmines in ADVANCE! Be aware of who will be in your audience and don't assume that your punch lines will pack the same punch on every audience member. Consider the diverse backrounds, religious, political, ethnic and moral beliefs.

> Keep It Clean. If it's sexual, scatological, or disguesting, it would be best to leave it out.

Language Tip From Toastmasters

Making your point can be challenging, especially when many words are commonly confused. For example, in English, ensure, insure and  assure are three words people often interchange - but the correct usage depends on the context. These tips will ensure you don't misuse them:

ENSURE is something you do to guarantee an event or condition: Jacklin made enough food to ensure that her guests wouldn't be hungry - Way to remember, the word ensure has two e's in it - just like guarantee

INSURE primarily means protecting against financial liability: Virginia insured her new car against damages. Think of the word insurance, which also deals with protecting finances.

ASSURE is something you do to people or animals to comfort or convince them: Alice assured Nick that his speech went well. You only assure things that are alive, which starts with an "a" - just like assure.

Parsons Toastmasters Does It Again!

Under the Leadership of President, Joshua Cuy, Parsons Toastmasters Club has once again made it to Select Distinguished status ( an international known and coveted status). This status means that the club is a QUALITY club with active, engaged members who are quickly progressing to their communication, presentation and leadership goals.

Congratulations to Shannon O’Connell for completing her CL Award in April 2012.

Shannon's accomplishment has given the Club 5 completed goals, which makes Parsons Toastmasters a Distinguished Club and the first Club in Area B2 to become Distinguished.

Remember, to obtain Distinguished Status, a Club must have at least 20 members (or a net gain of 5 members during the year), plus achieve 10 goals.

5 goals achieved = Distinguished
7 goals achieved = Select Distinguished
9-10 goals achieved = President’s Distinguished
